Situated in the north of Myitkyina, the capital of Kachin state and accessible only by air, Putao is a small and picturesque town in the Himalayan foothills. It has a population of approximately 6000 people, with a mostly ethnic Kachin and Lisu population. The Himalayan peak Hkakabo Razi sits on the border of Myanmar, China and India and is famed as Southeast Asia’s tallest snow-capped mountain standing at 5881 metres. The highlands north of Putao are considered one of the most pristine Himalayan environments in Asia. The locals often refer to the surrounding peaks as the Ice Mountains, the weather is cold around the year, Flora and Fauna can be seen in the forest around Putao.
